Here is my letter, wich I have sent as an ASPSA member:

Sep 12, 2006

Senator Hillary Clinton
United States Senate
476 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-0001

Dear Senator Clinton,

As a concerned constituent, I am writing to urge you to support and
cosponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915). S.
1915 would prohibit the transport, moving, delivering, receiving,
possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of any horse to be
slaughtered for human consumption. Earlier this year, H.R. 503, an
identical bill, was introduced in the House of Representatives. Now,
S. 1915 is being sponsored in the Senate by Senators John Ensign
(R-NV), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Robert Byrd (D-WV), Arlen Specter
(R-PA), Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Trent Lott (R-MS), Jim DeMint (R-SC),
Carl Levin (D-MI) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT).

Americans do not eat horse meat. However, thousands of horses are
cruelly slaughtered every year in this country to satisfy an overseas
market for horsemeat in countries like France, Belgium, and Japan.
Horses have been our trusted companions and are a historically
significant part of American culture. They deserve a more dignified
end to their lives than being slaughtered and served as dinner.

Additionally, the transport of horses to slaughter houses is often
extremely inhumane. Many horses are injured even before reaching the
slaughter plant due to overcrowded conditions during transport. Some
are shipped for more than 24 hours at a time without food, water, or
rest. In addition, the methods used to slaughter these horses once
they arrive at the plant can be exceptionally inhumane. The horses
are often forced to endure repeated stuns or blows and sometimes
remain conscious during their slaughter.

S. 1915 would put an end to this cruel and inhumane practice by
effectively prohibiting horse slaughter for human consumption in the
U.S. Therefore, I respectfully urge you to support and cosponsor the
American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Thank you for your time and
consideration.

Sincerely,

Natalia Funtova

Re: American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
That's great! Now Bo Derek has one more supporter. Of course, it is not entirely clear what to do with the dead horses, but the next thing you'll have to do is to write to Hillary Clinton, the most fraudulent person in the Senate, asking her to support some other bill, to prevent slaughter of horses for animal consumption, or to build more crematoriums, or to mandate and monitor the price of carcass disposal, or to prohibit euthanasia altogether, or to start charging $300-$500 for the pickup by the rendering plant. I wonder, in whose interests the S. 1915 is?... The bill is to prevent slaughter for human consumption , not slaughter . What does this mean? Take the business away from American meat farmers? And give it to whom? Somebody is about to make a lot of money... Who? The Chinese? The Europe will get its horsemeat, that’s clear. Just not from the USA. So, who are you helping? The American horses? The American people? Yourself, with your own sense of morality?

Re: American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
I'm with Pig.

What are you going to do with 60,000 horses that currently end up at a slaughter house? I sure am not looking forward to my taxes going up so we could support 60,000 horses added to the support bill EVERY YEAR!!!

How about the statement - "Americans do not eat horse meat". Really? You can vouch for every American? Even those who decent from cultures where consumption of horse meat is the norm? I sure don't want to be told what I am allowed to eat.

As for the transport to the slaughter houses - there are plenty of laws on the books already. Make sure that existing laws are enforced instead of inventing new ones, and the horses on their last trip will be grateful.

Regards,
Lidia in MA
